Ron Sino-Cruz’s 1996 Toyota Tacoma X-Cab Custom Mini Truck

The Toyota Tacoma isn’t exactly a fixture on the mini-truck scene, but that didn’t prevent Ron Sino-Cruz from choosing a 1996 Toyota Tacoma X-Cab as the basis for his classic-themed custom pickup. The ultra-low, super clean Tacoma is a beautiful example of what can be accomplished on the custom scene when following your own heart and ignoring negative comments from those who just don’t understand your particular vision.

Ron told MiniTruckinWeb.com that he initially began the project in his own backyard, but that he eventually ran into electrical and air suspension issues that were beyond his ability to diagnose. He turned to iDesigns in California to help him bring his mini truck dream from the drawing board to reality, and he has been very pleased with the end result. His deep involvement in the import car scene led to some clashes with friends who couldn’t quite understand the project he had taken on for himself, but Sino-Cruz stayed true to his original plans and put together a sharp-looking truck that silences all of its critics.

License plate leaves no doubt as to the truck's air bag capabilities.

With an eye towards old school hot rod styling, the ’96 Tacoma has had all of its exterior trim – including door handles – shaved completely, and the rear features Cadillac taillights as well as a widened bed and a roll pan to tie everything together. A billet grille and Chevrolet headlights dress up the front end of the truck, along with a prominent cowl induction hood, and the truck rides on 19-inch Wed Kranze Cerebus wheels. Inside, Ron and passengers ride on Jeep JK seats and are entertained by an Eclipse stereo system, Kenwood speakers, an Alpine amplifier and a JVC five-inch monitor.

Under the hood, the Tacoma’s 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine benefits from a TRD camshaft and a K&N air intake that work together to help it breath that much better and produce a bit more power than stock. A Magnaflow muffler lets people know when the truck is approaching, and an automatic transmission makes the pickup the perfect cruiser while leaving a hand free to work the truck’s impressive Contitech adjustable air ride system.

Ron Sino-Cruz’s custom Tacoma is a beautiful and unique ride that proves you don’t always have to go sky-high with suspension mods when carving out your own niche in the custom pickup truck world.
