Newly Redesigned 2016 Toyota Tacoma to be unveiled at 2015 Detroit Auto Show

If you believe the current rumor mill, a new Toyota Tacoma will be unveiled at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show.

New Truck Will Debut

Toyota confirmed to us via email that the truck will be shown at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Several Sources are saying Bill Fay, general manager of the Toyota brand, said a new Tacoma will be unveiled at the show. Most sources are pointing to this quote:

“With the new entries coming in, the market should expand,” Bill Fay, general manager of the Toyota division said.

The quote comes from a Toyota event. Other sources are saying the marketers at the event told reporters a new Tacoma will be unveiled.

New Truck Spotted

While no other details have been released. We do have a spy photo and past experience to help us theorize on what the new truck will be like.

These spy photos of a new Toyota Tacoma seem to indicate a new model is coming soon.

If the truck is unveiled in Detroit, the timing seems about right. We mean, typically spy photographers take pictures of a new vehicle testing months before an unveil. Spy photos of a new truck were taken this summer.

Also, at the Denver auto show, we were told Toyota was working on a new model. Our source didn’t have an idea on timing, but he said point blank they were working on it.

New and Improved Tacoma?

While the news of a new Tacoma leads many to wild speculation like an entirely new look, diesel engine option and drastically improved fuel economy, this will likely not be the case. Sorry to temper the enthusiasm, but let’s look at what will likely be improved.

Based on the spy photos and seeing how they improved the Tundra and Camry, we can reasonably expect the new truck to have a brand new interior with larger infotainment screens and new dash gauges. There will also be work done to make it more ergonomic and there will be an increase in total cabin space.

On the outside, we think the truck will feature a new grill, new front bumper and overall a more aggressive look. This would continue the trend of the Tundra. It makes sense for them to do the same.

The powertrain will likely be carried over with improvements like a six-speed transmission and direct injection. Also, we may see active grille shutters and more advanced light-weight steel added to the frame to cut weight. These improvements will likely lead to better fuel economy in the range of 2-3 MPGs. This would make a lot of sense considering the current Tacoma’s EPA rating is about 2-3 MPGs less than the new Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon.

While we have tempered enthusiasm for all sorts of things to be included in a new Toyota Tacoma, we know Toyota is much more likely to make a small investment rather than a radical shift.
