Toyota will recall 690,000 2005-2011 Tacoma pickups to address rear suspension issues related to leaf springs.

Officially, Toyota says the recall will address rear suspension systems.

“The involved vehicles’ rear suspension system contains leaf springs that are constructed of either three or four leaves. There is a possibility that a leaf could fracture due to stress and corrosion,” Toyota said.

While the ride quality is a concern, the larger concern is the leaf spring coming into contact with the road causing it to spark. This could cause a fire with the leaf springs being so close to the gas tank. The likelihood of a fire is pretty tiny since the gas tank would have to have a leak as well. However, it is possible.

We have been covering the various issues with Toyota leaf springs for a while now. Click here to read our exhaustive post on why they break.

No word on what the “fix” will be, but we suspect new, better quality leaf springs will be installed.
