2000 Toyota Tacoma Solid Axle Swap – Featured Truck

Modified Toyota Tacoma’s trucks come in all shapes and sizes. While some just like to Plasti Dip or debadge their trucks, their are those that like to go “all in.” This is off-road, rock crawling Tacoma is the “all in” variety. We can’t decide what’s more impressive, the truck or the owner’s determination in building it.

We had the chance to do a Q & A with the builder who goes by Supra TT over at Tacomaworld.com.

Q. What made you decide to do the build?

A. I wanted to convert the truck to a SFA because it just makes the truck that much more capable offroad.

Q. How much offroading/build experience did you have before you started it?

A. Before I really didn’t have much offroad experience or knowledge. I started on an ATV at age 3 and have always loved the offroad adventure. The only thing I did with the truck before I built it was cruise minimum maintenance roads haha.

Q. What was the toughest item to mod?

A. The toughest item to mod would be the setting up of the suspension geometry, and I didn’t get it right the first time, or even the second time… 3rd times a charm. I wouldn’t even say it’s difficult, but it seems alot of people mess it up more than anything.

Q. What advice would you have for a newbie who wanted to do their own?

A. My advice to a newbie is to do it 100% PROPERLY the first time. Don’t cut corners or you will pay for it in the end… I am a victim of this.

Q. What item on the truck could you not live without?

A. I cannot live without the full hydraulic steering. That is by far the best upgrade I have done. It turns so smoothly and hasn’t let me down yet. I added it 2 years after and I am one happy camper!

Q. How long has it taken you to finish it OR is it a work in progress?

A. The truck is still a work in progress… the initial swap took 8 weeks and I’ve been re-doing everything since then. There is still many problems that occur on a daily basis that will need attention eventually… It’s part of the trade, it’s difficult to get it right the first time.

Q. What item gets the most attention when people approach your truck?

A. I’m not sure what particular item gets the most attention, but overall the truck itself gets the attention because it is unique, it’s a Toyota with custom everything. Most people are used to seeing Jeeps built up, but really that isn’t building anything besides bolting cool parts on.
