Toyota Hilux Makes Appearance on U.S. Soil

Yep, you read that right. The revered internationally known Toyota Hilux is currently in the U.S. And no, you still can’t buy one, but you can measure it!

The Toyota Hilux not really coming to America.
Why is the Hilux in the U.S.? It is part of the Specialty Equipment Market Association’s (SEMA) measuring program which allows aftermarket accessory manufactures the ability to measure it to develop new parts to fit it according to Trucktrend.com. The truck will be transported via flatbed for a year under a “temporary import” waiver from NHTSA and the EPA.
The Hilux was chosen for this program since it is looking to launch into even more international markets and that U.S.-made accessories sell well overseas. The demand for these accessories seems to be rising among foreign automotive buyers as well. Lastly, the Hilux was also chosen due to how well they are able to be customized and accessorized.
According to Linda Spencer, Director of International and Government Relations for SEMA, they were able to purchase the truck in part with “a $500,000 grant from the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration’s Market Development Cooperator Program.” It will be transported to three different measuring areas around the country and then made available for on-site measuring for individual manufactures.
Spencer also said the growth markets for accessories is the Middle East and China (no real surprise there).
While it seems odd that a “not for sale in the U.S.” vehicle would be purchased using a Government Grant, it does make some business growth sense. It creates an even playing field for all aftermarket accessory makers to create products to feed a global demand. Spencer also said that the global T6 Ford Ranger and the Volkswagen Amarok pickup could be next in line to be purchased and brought into the U.S.
The real bummer of the deal is for those Hilux fans. While you might have been able to see one/drive one in person overseas, most likely you have only seen pictures. Now you might see it rolling down the highway near you.

Teasers! LOL!
In previous generations, our small Toyota pickup was the same as what much of the rest of the world got as the Hilux. The newest Tacomas are built off off the 4Runner chasis
Any used small Toyota pickup or 4Runner you buy that is model year 2004 or older is essentially the same as a Hilux.
