A recent British arbitration panel has ruled against Global Vehicles, the would be American Importer of Mahindra-brand Indian pickups. Turbo Diesel Mahindra Pickup Importer Loses Case

A British Arbitration panel has ruled against Global Vehicles meaning no turbo-diesel Mahindra pickup will be coming to the U.S. market anytime soon.

The Mahindra company announced in 2006 it planned to import its turbo-diesel pickup to the U.S. with partner Global Vehicles. The project was subsequently hobbled with issues arising from dealership design change requests and the many EPA hurdles an imported turbo-diesel has to jump. Then in 2010, Mahindra announced that its contract with Global Vehicles had expired.

According to a statement by Mahindra filed on the stock exchange, the panel unanimously concluded that the contract between Global Vehicles and Mahindra had expired and therefore Mahindra had not violated the terms of the contract or violated any U.S. laws.

John Perez, Global Vehicles CEO, declined to comment on the statement by Mahindra.

While this is a blow to Global Vehicles, there are still many U.S. dealerships who are trying to get the truck here.

And it seems the Indian-based Mahindra is still interested in getting into the U.S. market. It now has bought an interest Ssangyong Motor Co., a Korean automaker with its own interest in importing to the U.S.

This is unfortunate news for U.S. truck consumers who have been clamoring for a compact turbo diesel like the Mahindra pickup or the Toyota Hilux. The difficulties in meeting EPA standards and the majority of the truck buying trend going toward larger full-size pickups seems to be a very large hurdle for this idea to come to reality.

Maybe with the reintroduction of the Chevy Colorado, the trend of discontinuning compact pickups (Ford Ranger, Dodge Dakota) will be reversed and more manufactures will invest in different engine options for this segment.

What do you think? Would you be interested in a turbo-diesel compact truck?

I really hope we can get this truck to the US market. It would be great & probably really increase overall sales. The fact that its a good looking compact truck would interest a lot of people. Now to just find a company that will let US import it :)
